Six Things to Consider When Buying a Digital Piano

Whether you're new to music or a seasoned player, just about every customer we encounter has questions when shopping for a digital piano.

Prior to purchasing an instrument, we suggest considering the following questions:

1. Who will be playing it?

   Start by assessing who in your family will be initially using the piano. Are they a beginner, intermediate or advanced player? It's important to match the quality of the instrument to the level of the player to avoid disappointment and nurture growth. For families with players at a wider range of experience, find an instrument versatile enough to handle everyone. 2. How will you be using it?

   Will your new piano be used as a learning tool? Do you have plans to connect it to a computer or mobile device? How will you learn to play? Do you intend to take lessons on your own or with a teacher?

3. Does it need to be portable or will it stay mainly in one spot?

   Will you need to take the piano places? Today's models are lightweight and accessories are available such as carry bags, folding stands and benches that will provide comfort, ease-of-use and flexibility. Ask about our bundles! 4. Where will it be placed in your home?

   If it's for home use in a fixed location, you'll be able to choose from upright or grand shaped models with a variety of finishes to match your décor. For homes that have space restrictions, a portable model can be put away into a closet between practice sessions. Every digital piano can be used with headphones.

5. Have you established a budget amount for this purchase?

   As with anything you buy, there are different levels of quality. For digital pianos, it helps to break them down into "good," "better" or "best." A good model, also called entry-level, can cost $600 to $1200. These will typically include weighted keys, built-in speakers and USB connectivity. Better pianos ($1,200 to $3,000) improve on the action and sound engine to provide a more realistic playing experience. The best models ($3,000 and up) include the highest rated actions, sound engines, speaker systems and build quality.

   Premium-quality models are in a class of their own. These include hybrids (combining acoustic actions with digital features) and top-of-the-line models utilizing the best components and design ($6,000 to $15,000).

6. What kind of care is required?

   Occasional cleaning is recommended to protect your piano from dirt and dust.

   Cabinet/Case

   • Lightly brush off surface dust using a feather duster or soft cloth
   • Avoid using chemical-based wipes or cleaning agents, which are not designed for furniture because their chemical compositions may damage the finish
   
   

   Keyboard

   • Wipe gently using a soft cloth (use separate wipes for the action and body)
   • When dirt is noticeable, dampen a cloth in a diluted solution of a neutral detergent, wring out well, and use this cloth to wipe away the dirt
   • While cleaning the keys, start at the back of the key and pull the wipe towards you. This avoids "pushing" dirt into the piano case
   • Never use any kind of alcohol, such as rubbing alcohol or denatured alcohol, because it can cause cracking
   • Wash your hands prior to playing the instrument to avoid transferring dirt to the keys
