Frequently Asked Questions

What types of digital pianos are best for beginners?

For beginners, it’s smart to choose a digital piano that has weighted keys, so the feel approximates an acoustic piano. Look for beginner-friendly features like built-in lessons or "practice features", headphone outputs for quiet practice, and a solid stand/pedal (see our bundles). As a first-time buyer, brand quality matters as well, make sure you look for a brand that also has step up models and a solid history of quality products. Our Beginner & First Lessons section shows excellent options that fit these criteria.

How do I choose the right digital piano for a student who’s advancing?

If the player has some experience and is ready to move up, they’ll benefit from a piano with better "touch response" (also known as "action"), richer tone samples, and a "triple" pedal for sustain, soft, and sostenuto functions. We list instruments in our Advancing Students & Growing Musicians category that strike a balance between performance features and budget.

What should I look for if I’m buying a digital piano for home/family room use?

For the home environment you’ll want an instrument that looks good in the room and still delivers authentic tone and feel. Features like multiple speakers, good key-action, built-in apps/streams, and a solid warranty matter (see our warranty section per model). Digital pianos now come in a wide range of finish options beyond the tradition black, many brands feature colors such as different variations of white, light oak, or even reds and yellows! In our Home & Family Room section you’ll find options ranging in style and price to fit living-space aesthetics and functional needs.

What are the advantages of a luxury upright or grand-style digital piano?

Luxury upright and grand-style digital pianos represent the pinnacle of digital piano craftsmanship, designed for players who want the elegance and performance of an acoustic piano with the convenience and versatility of digital technology.

These instruments often feature flagship sound engines that use multi-layered sampling and physical modeling to recreate the depth, resonance, and character of a concert grand piano. You’ll also find premium key actions—often made with real wood and escapement mechanisms—offering the most realistic touch and response available.

Visually, these instruments serve as a centerpiece in the home. Many include high-end cabinetry, polished finishes, and details like soft-close key covers or opening lids that replicate the look and feel of an acoustic upright or baby grand. For performers, they also include powerful multi-speaker systems, delivering a room-filling tone ideal for living rooms, churches, or intimate performance spaces. Explore our Luxury Upright & Grand Pianos category to discover these standout models from the top-tier recognized brands.

What does “weighted-keys or weighted-action” mean and why is it important?

“Weighted keys” or “weighted-action” means the keys are designed to simulate the resistance of an acoustic piano’s hammer action rather than the light feel of a synthesizer keyboard. This is important because it builds proper finger/hand strength and technique, which is especially helpful if the player might later move to an acoustic piano or perform live. Including this in your decision helps ensure long-term satisfaction and growth.

Do I need any accessories when purchasing a digital piano?

Yes—while the piano is the core, accessories matter for comfort, durability and full functionality. Common accessories include:

  • A proper stand (multiple portable metal options) or furniture stand console depending on the model.
  • A proper piano sustain/damper pedal.
  • A bench or seat for correct ergonomics.
  • Headphones for quiet practice.
  • Optional: a dust cover, USB/MIDI computer connectivity, audio subwoofer.

At Kraft Music we often bundle the piano with many of these accessories to give you a “ready to play” setup.

How does a digital piano ship and what does it cost?

The cost of shipping is usually paid for up front by Kraft Music within the lower 48 states. Depending on the model (determined by size) your digital piano may ship in one of two ways.

  • Smaller multi-box digital pianos (and bundles) will mostly ship via the traditional ground network and arrive within 2–5 business days.
  • Larger furniture-style digital pianos will ship via freight/truck carrier and arrive within 4–7 business days. These require an appointment and the driver will place boxes in the nearest dry area such as a porch, garage, or inside the threshold.

What about assembly for furniture models?

While the shipping services do not include assembly, with some simple instructions and the occasional screwdriver, you're all set to go. For digital pianos, you are generally only putting together the stand itself. With the help of a friend, you then place the piano portion on top of the stand and secure it with the provided screws. We also have detailed instructional videos for many of our furniture style digital pianos.

Will a digital piano require tuning like an acoustic piano?

No—one of the big advantages of digital pianos is that they’ll feel like an acoustic piano but are virtually maintenance-free when it comes to tuning. Unlike acoustic pianos, you don’t need to worry about humidity changes, regular tuning appointments, or the instrument falling out of tune. For a gift, that means less hassle for the recipient and likely fewer hidden costs.
