The Hammond XK-7D is a fully integrated dual-manual tonewheel organ designed as a complete performance instrument. Built as a dedicated dual-manual system, it delivers the sound, feel, and workflow of a traditional Hammond console without the need for external add-ons, while maintaining a modern, stage-ready form factor.
Key Features
- Virtual Electro-Mechanical (VEM) tonewheel sound engine
- 108 digitally modeled tonewheels, including high and pedal wheels
- Dual full-size manuals with original B-3 key dimensions and fulcrum point
- Six mechanical key contacts per manual for authentic response
- Modeled transformer, vintage preamp, and enhanced Leslie simulation
- 11-pin Leslie connector for real rotary speaker cabinets
- Dedicated key click and tonewheel leakage controls
- Expanded transistor and pipe organ sections
- Separate bass output with flexible routing options
- Large color display with onboard reverb and delay effects
Complete Dual-Manual Design
The XK-7D is engineered as a true dual-manual instrument, with both manuals fully integrated into a single system. Each manual matches the dimensions and fulcrum point of an original B-3, ensuring consistent feel and response across both keyboards. Six mechanical contacts per key provide accurate triggering for traditional Hammond techniques and expressive performance.
Tonewheel Modeling and Signal Path
Powered by Hammond’s VEM sound engine, the XK-7D models the full electromechanical signal chain of a vintage tonewheel organ. Its 108 digital tonewheels feed a modeled transformer and vintage-style preamp before reaching either the onboard digital Leslie or a physical rotary speaker through the 11-pin Leslie connector.
Detailed Control of Organ Character
Expanded tonewheel editing, dedicated key click and leakage controls, and preamp modeling based on classic AO-series circuits allow precise control over the organ’s character. The enhanced digital Leslie includes adjustable gain, enabling natural rotary overdrive and dynamic response under performance conditions.
Additional Organ Voices
Beyond tonewheel sounds, the XK-7D includes an expanded transistor organ section with Italian, British, and Japanese-inspired models. The pipe organ division provides classical and theatre voices with multiple virtual ranks, tremulants, and voicing options suitable for both liturgical and performance use.
Routing, Effects, and Interface
A separate bass output can be assigned to pedal tones or configured as a low-pass filtered output for subwoofer reinforcement. A large color display improves visibility and navigation, while onboard DSP effects offer dedicated reverb and delay controls accessible directly from the top panel.
Frequently Asked Questions: Hammond XK-7D
What is the Hammond XK-7D?
The Hammond XK-7D is a dedicated dual-manual tonewheel organ designed to deliver the sound, response, and physical playing experience of a classic Hammond console in a single integrated instrument. It is built around Hammond’s Virtual Electro-Mechanical (VEM) technology for authentic tonewheel behavior and performance control.
How does the XK-7D differ from the single-manual XK-7?
The XK-7D features two full manuals with vintage-correct key dimensions and six-contact action on both keyboards, providing a true dual-manual Hammond console experience. The XK-7 is the single-manual version of the same instrument. Both share the same sound engine and core technology.
What sound engine does the Hammond XK-7D use?
The XK-7D uses Hammond’s Virtual Electro-Mechanical (VEM) sound engine, a physical modeling system that recreates the full electromechanical signal path of a vintage tonewheel organ, from tone generation through amplification.
How many tonewheels are modeled?
The VEM engine models 108 digital tonewheels, including high and pedal wheels, to accurately reproduce the harmonic structure and interaction of a traditional Hammond organ.
How authentic is the keyboard action?
Both manuals are built to original B-3 key dimensions and fulcrum point and use six mechanical key contacts per key, enabling authentic Hammond techniques such as glissandi, fast repetition, and percussion-style articulation.
Can the Hammond XK-7D be connected to a real Leslie speaker?
Yes. The XK-7D includes an 11-pin Leslie connector for direct connection to real rotary speaker cabinets, in addition to its onboard digital Leslie simulation.
Can key click and tonewheel leakage be adjusted?
Yes. Dedicated controls allow independent adjustment of key click and tonewheel leakage, making it possible to dial in subtle cleanliness or pronounced vintage character.
Does the XK-7D include organ voices beyond tonewheel sounds?
In addition to its tonewheel engine, the XK-7D includes expanded transistor organ models and a pipe organ section with classical and theatre-style voices.
Is there a dedicated bass output?
Yes. A separate bass output can be assigned to pedal tones or configured as a low-pass filtered output for subwoofer reinforcement.
What onboard effects are included?
The XK-7D includes onboard reverb and delay effects, accessible directly from the top panel and controlled via the large color display.
