Frequently Asked Questions: Roland GP-9
What kind of piano is the Roland GP-9, and who is it designed for?
The GP-9 is Roland's flagship digital grand piano, built for players who want the most expressive, realistic, and immersive piano experience available in a digital instrument. It suits serious pianists, professional musicians, and discerning buyers who want an instrument that competes with acoustic grands in both touch and tone, without the tuning, maintenance, and volume constraints that come with one.
How large is the Roland GP-9, and how much space does it need?
The GP-9 is a full-footprint baby grand, measuring approximately 59 inches deep and 57 inches wide, with a height of nearly 40 inches at the keyboard and over 70 inches with the lid fully open. It is a substantial instrument that commands its space, and is best suited to a dedicated music room, large living area, or performance setting. Integrated casters make repositioning easier despite the piano's considerable weight of just over 372 pounds.
What sound engine does the GP-9 use, and how realistic is the piano tone?
The GP-9 uses Roland's Piano Reality Concert modeling engine, the most advanced sound technology in the GP series. It recreates every acoustic component of a grand piano at a physical level, from the soundboard and frame to the strings, hammers, and cabinet resonances, with unlimited polyphony so that no note or sympathetic resonance is ever cut short. Modeled ambience is built directly into the sound engine, letting you perform in simulated acoustic environments ranging from an intimate studio to a large cathedral, with six ambience types and eleven depth settings.
What makes the key action on the GP-9 different from other digital pianos?
The GP-9 uses Roland's Hybrid Grand keyboard, which goes beyond standard digital piano actions in several meaningful ways. The keys feature hybrid wood and molded construction with Ivory Feel surfaces, a long key pivot length that matches the leverage geometry of a concert grand, and haptic vibration built into each key that physically simulates the body resonances you feel through the keys of an acoustic piano. High Precision Sensing captures the subtlest nuances of touch and velocity, and all three pedals support continuous detection and full damper modeling.
How does the GP-9 speaker system work, and what does it sound like in a room?
The GP-9 features an eight-speaker Piano Reality Concert projection system with a total amplification of 150 watts, including spatial, cabinet, and horizontal definition speaker channels plus a dedicated center channel. The horizontal definition speakers are designed so that notes move across the sound field as you play from bass to treble, mirroring the physical string layout of an acoustic grand's soundboard. The result is a full-surround listening experience for both the player and anyone in the room, with the lid angle providing further control over sound projection and character.
How many sounds does the GP-9 have, and how much can I customize the piano tone?
The GP-9 includes 324 sounds covering grand and upright pianos, electric pianos, organs, and a broad range of other voices. For players who want to go deeper, the Piano Designer tools offer extensive control over string tuning and temperament, keyboard sensitivity, duplex scaling, cabinet resonances, and more. The integrated ambience engine adds a further layer of environmental shaping, making the GP-9 one of the most customizable digital pianos available at any price point.
Can the GP-9 be used for silent practice with headphones?
Yes. The GP-9 includes a 1/4-inch and two 1/8-inch headphone outputs for private practice, and volume is easily adjusted at any time. The near-field speaker design means the player experiences a rich, enveloping sound even at low volumes, but headphones remain an excellent option for late-night practice or recording sessions where silence is needed.
Does the GP-9 support Bluetooth and external device connectivity?
Yes. The GP-9 supports Bluetooth audio for streaming music from a smartphone or tablet through the piano's speaker system, and Bluetooth MIDI for wireless connection to music production and learning apps. A stereo 1/8-inch aux input handles wired audio sources, and USB ports support computers and flash storage for recording, file transfer, and expanded song libraries via Roland Cloud.
Can two people play on the GP-9 at the same time?
Yes. Twin Piano mode splits the keyboard into two mirrored sections with matching ranges, making it well suited to teacher-student lessons or side-by-side duet practice at the full size of a baby grand. Split and layer features are also available for performance use, and dual headphone outputs allow both players to monitor privately.
Does the GP-9 require tuning or regular maintenance like an acoustic grand?
No. The GP-9 never goes out of tune and requires none of the voicing, regulation, humidity management, or periodic servicing that acoustic grands demand. Despite its concert-grand presence and performance, it is a low-maintenance instrument that will sound exactly as intended for years without professional upkeep. A maintenance set is included in the box for basic care of the cabinet and keys.
