Regen supports classic Synclavier additive synthesis for full control of 24 harmonics and adds subtractive synthesis, allowing creation of super saws, PCM square waves and noise generation. Or you can use samples for your carrier waveform. These different waveform generators can be mixed: you have up to 12 partials to use in your sound design creation with crossfades assignable to inputs such as velocity, pressure, mod wheel and, of course, keyboard.
Regen is loaded with content to get you inspired fast. There are over 550 timbre presets across 10 newly-commissioned timbre libraries. On top of that, there are over 2,000 royalty-free samples built in, including over 350 selected original samples from the NED era and 2 exclusive artist sample libraries.
Developed by New England Digital in the 1980s, resynthesis is a technique to create sounds with precisely-controlled harmonics that vary over time; think of it as sampling before there was sampling. Back then, memory was expensive, so storing samples was impractical. Now, memory is not in short supply, but resynthesis is still useful for a variety of reasons.
Perhaps you're craving the characteristic of a resynthesized sound; similar to early speech synthesis, the process imparts a low-fi artificial character to the sound. Or perhaps you wish to transpose the sample more than an octave without it breaking down. Maybe you want to elongate a sound by looping the sustain stage more easily. Or totally mess with the sound's tuning and FM over its duration. And maybe you just want to experiment to get something that sounds unique.
When you're done exploring the factory content, you'll have fun with the sound design possibilities. You can layer up to 12 partials with different sound generators – additive, subtractive, samples – then apply dynamic effects per partial. Regen is truly an expressive instrument, both to program and to play. Polyphonic aftertouch and MPE are fully supported, and there's a sophisticated modulators section where you can apply responsive curves to properties driven by pressure, velocity, mod wheel position and more.
Over 40 years of synth design has led to this product. Regen is a sound designer's dream in a timeless desktop package housed in aluminum and finished with a sand-textured black-and-Synclavier-red surround with rubberized plinths. A VK display that mimics the display from the Synclavier II VPK edition is included as well as a main modal display that shows current parameters, user settings, timbre library, etc.
