Features Overview
The hybrid sound
The N1X offers 15 different voices, from pianos to organs, and harpsichord to piano/string combinations. While all of the sounds housed in N1X have been created with the greatest attention to detail, nothing can compare to the its samples of two legendary concert grands: the Yamaha CFX and the Bösendorfer Imperial.
Yamaha CFX
The nine-foot CFX is a full sized concert grand piano characterized by a wide palette of tonal colors and the ability to create the subtlest expressive nuances. The CFX was one of the Yamaha's most ambitious projects and greatest achievements, and no expense was spared to confirm that what you hear in the N1X lives up to the reputation of the original.
Bösendorfer Imperial
Bösendorfer has been perfecting the craft of piano creation for over 185 years. The legendary 97-key Imperial Grand has been serving artists from Franz Liszt to Tori Amos since 1909, offering the largest soundboard of all concert grands and a characteristic warm tone known as the "Viennese Sound." From dramatic presence and power to tender passion, every subtlety of this $300,000 masterpiece is at your fingertips with Clavinova.
The hybrid touch
When considering the experience of playing an acoustic piano, the touch is every bit as important as the sound. The N1X has inherited Yamaha's esteem concert grand piano action, with wood keys and a comfortable touch. Beneath your fingers you sense the same precise weight and responsiveness, the same scope for expression. To capture every nuance of your performance, Yamaha employs a non-contact optical sensor system that doesn’t affect the feel or performance of the action in any way.
GP Response damper pedal
The damper pedal on an acoustic piano functions like a lever system to raise the damper off the strings. Yamaha’s GP Response Damper Pedal feels heavier as you push it further down, just like the damper pedal on an acoustic piano. This allows a player to have a more consistent experience between playing the N1X and a grand piano.
Spatial Acoustic Sampling, Spatial Acoustic Speaker System
Yamaha has revolutionized the approach to sampling recording and playback of the notes of the actual acoustic piano. Taking samples at four positions allows them to capture the true dimentions of the sound from a grand piano. The N1X speaker system is designed to ensure that this sound is heard best at the playing position. A three-way system featuring woofer, mid-range and tweeter speakers precisely reproduce the rich natural resonance of the soundboard. Even more, each of the low-, mid-, and high-frequency bands has been given its own amplifier to prevent interference between bands.
A fully immersive headphone experience
Thanks to Yamaha's advanced binaural sampling* technology, the sound you hear through your headphones is remarkably lifelike. This technology uses piano samples recorded by specialized microphones that capture locational information and other nuances discerned by the human ear. The resulting sound is so natural, so enveloping, that you’ll soon forget you’re even wearing headphones at all. (*CFX Grand Voice only)
The digital advantage
While every effort has been made to offer an acoustic piano experience, saving money on piano tuning is hardly the greatest advantage to owning a digital piano. Yamaha offers state-of-the-art technologies in N1X, allowing you a greater opportunity to explore your creativity. Advanced connectivity options include USB for storage and MIDI, Bluetooth for audio streaming, and WiFi iOS App integration.

Frequently Asked Questions:
What makes the Yamaha AvantGrand N1X different from a regular digital piano?
The N1X uses a real grand piano action with actual hammers, a longer key pivot, and the same mechanical design found in acoustic grands. This gives it a level of touch authenticity that standard weighted-key digital pianos cannot replicate. It bridges the gap between a traditional acoustic grand and a full digital instrument.
Does the N1X feel like playing a real grand piano?
Yes, more closely than virtually any other digital instrument. The specialized grand piano action uses the same key geometry and hammer mechanics as an acoustic grand, delivering fast repetition, precise control, and natural resistance. The GP Response Damper Pedal also mimics the progressive weight of an acoustic grand's sustain pedal for a consistent feel underfoot.
What piano sounds are included in the N1X?
The N1X features samples of two of the world's most celebrated concert grands: the Yamaha CFX, known for its expressive tonal range, and the Bösendorfer Imperial, a 97-key grand prized for its warm "Viennese Sound." Beyond those flagship voices, the instrument includes 15 total voices covering organs, harpsichord, and piano/string combinations.
How does the N1X sound through speakers compared to a grand piano?
Yamaha's Spatial Acoustic Sampling captures the sound of an acoustic grand from four positions, preserving its true dimensional character. The six-speaker, three-way system, with dedicated amplifiers for low, mid, and high frequencies, reproduces that sound at the playing position with natural resonance and depth. The result is a listening experience designed to feel like sound is coming from within the instrument, not from a speaker cabinet.
How does the N1X compare to the other AvantGrand models like the N2 or N3X?
The N1X is the entry point in the AvantGrand lineup, offering the same core grand piano action and sound engine as the higher models at a smaller footprint and lower investment. The N2 and N3X are larger, heavier instruments with expanded speaker systems and a more pronounced grand piano cabinet presence. Players who want the authentic action without stepping up in size or cost often find the N1X to be the right balance.
What connectivity options does the N1X offer?
The N1X includes USB for audio recording and MIDI, standard stereo audio inputs and outputs, and Bluetooth for wireless audio streaming. It also supports WiFi connectivity for use with the Smart Pianist iOS app via the optional Yamaha UD-WL01 adapter or a USB camera adapter.
What is the Smart Pianist app and how does it work with the N1X?
Smart Pianist is a free iOS app that connects to the N1X and lets you analyze and display the chords of songs from your Apple Music library, making it easier to learn and play along with your favorite tracks. It also gives you touch-based control over many of the piano's settings and functions. Connection requires either a Yamaha UD-WL01 Wi-Fi adapter or an Apple Lightning to USB Camera Adapter with a USB cable.
Does the N1X require tuning or regular maintenance?
No. Because the N1X is a digital instrument, it never goes out of tune and requires none of the voicing, regulation, or humidity management that an acoustic grand demands. Virtual Resonance Modeling (VRM) handles sympathetic string resonance digitally, so the expressive qualities of an acoustic piano are preserved without the upkeep.
