One advantage of choosing a digital piano is that you can play with headphones on to keep your surroundings quiet. However, many people may find that their ears become fatigued if they play with headphones on for too long. One of the main reasons for this is that sound played directly into the ears is completely different from the natural sound of an actual piano. Binaural sampling solves this problem. This is a method of sampling in which special microphones are used in the same positions as the pianist’s ears to capture piano sounds the way that they sound in reality. Yamaha chose this method to create the ambience and full, natural resonance of acoustic pianos in Clavinova pianos. This makes pianists feel as though they are sitting at a grand piano even when they play with headphones on.

A grand piano naturally projects sound through its large soundboard and cabinet, allowing resonance to spread evenly throughout the surrounding space. Digital pianos, by comparison, rely on speaker systems, where perceived sound can vary depending on the listener’s position. To recreate a more natural acoustic experience, Yamaha applies its acoustic piano expertise to the CLP series through its Grand Acoustic Imaging approach. This involves carefully engineered speaker placement, directional control, and balanced frequency response across lows, mids, and highs, combined with acoustic elements such as diffusers, waveguides, and bidirectional horn designs. Together, these technologies help create a more natural, room-filling sound that better reflects the way an acoustic grand piano projects in space.

Yamaha’s GrandTouch pedal system is designed to closely replicate the feel and response of acoustic grand piano pedals, with pivot points, angles, and travel distance aligned to grand piano specifications for a more natural resistance and movement. It also supports precise half-pedal control, allowing for subtle adjustments in sustain and tonal blending through carefully tuned friction and resistance. Together with its carefully considered shape, materials, and positioning, the system delivers a more authentic pedaling experience that brings the digital piano closer to the behavior and nuance of an acoustic grand piano.

Yamaha’s Smart Pianist app expands the functionality of the CLP-800 Series by providing an intuitive way to interact with your instrument and manage music content. The app can generate playable song data from PDF scores, analyze audio or MIDI files stored on a smart device, and display chord progressions or accompaniment information to support learning and practice. With built-in Bluetooth® MIDI connectivity, the CLP-800 Series connects wirelessly to Smart Pianist, allowing seamless integration that makes it easier to explore new repertoire, practice songs, and enhance everyday playing.
